Description

La Charca de Maspalomas -

briefly just called "la charca", is an oasis in the dunes of Maspalomas, located between the dunes in the east and the "El oasis", the oldest tourist district of Maspalomas in the west. It's a protected area, that serves many bird species as breeding area.

The oasis is the final part of a small river which comes down from the mountains but normally does not reach the ocean, instead froms a small lake just shortly before reaching the sea, between the water of the lake and the ocean is a 100m wide stripe of beach.

Only when there's a lot rain it can happen that the water of the lake, often reffered to as a lagoon, flows over into the ocean, last time this happened was in February 2010 (if i'm correct).

In the last time the area suffers a big drought, 18 Months without rain, thousands of dead fish have been removed out of the lagoon, also the vegetation has been damaged of the big heat. The local government decided to let ocean water flow into the lagoon, to increase the oxygen in the water.

This is just one of the many photos i took there, the fourth one to be uploaded.... view from the promenade called "Paseo de la Charca" to the south, you can see the thin beach strip which divides the lake from the ocean.
